US senator accuses Trump, Musk of orchestrating ‘billionaire takeover’

(MENAFN) Democratic Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut has accused US President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk of orchestrating a "billionaire takeover" of the government for personal gain. In a recent ABC News interview, Murphy claimed that Trump is using his presidential power to punish political enemies and reward allies, especially billionaires like Musk. He argued that Trump's recent actions, including the suspension of foreign aid and disbanding the USAID agency, are part of a broader effort to reshape government to favor his interests.

Murphy labeled Trump's moves as the most serious constitutional crisis since Watergate, describing them as an attempt to centralize power for corrupt purposes. He also criticized Trump's decision to appoint Musk as a “special government employee” to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). According to Murphy, these actions would not only weaken democracy but also make America less secure globally, particularly by eliminating USAID, which he described as a critical agency countering Chinese influence.

The senator further accused Musk, who has previously criticized USAID, of aligning with financial interests in China, suggesting that Musk’s actions are designed to benefit his business ventures there. Trump, meanwhile, has claimed that USAID has been misusing taxpayer dollars to promote pro-Democratic media coverage and funding controversial research.
