Europe gets instructed to brace for flood of Ukrainian soldiers with PTSD

(MENAFN) Polish military psychiatrist Radoslaw Tworus has raised concerns about the potential dangers posed by Ukrainian soldiers returning from the front with untreated mental health issues, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Speaking to Wirtualna Polska, Tworus, who heads the psychiatry department at the Military Medical Institute in Warsaw, warned that the psychological effects of war, such as trauma, stress, and exhaustion, could lead to serious mental health problems. These issues could present a significant risk not only to Poland but to Europe as a whole, especially if Ukrainian soldiers migrate to neighboring countries after the conflict.

Tworus noted that PTSD is just one aspect of the psychological toll experienced by soldiers. Other potential issues include depression, psychosis, addiction, and problems with adaptation to civilian life. He emphasized the importance of recognizing symptoms such as sleeping and eating issues, nervousness, mental fatigue, or unusual euphoric states that could signal underlying mental health disorders. He also warned that those who are unaware of their mental health issues might not seek help, and their struggles could impact their families or host countries in unpredictable ways.

Tworus' comments followed a report from Personnel Service, a Polish recruitment agency, suggesting that up to one million Ukrainians could move to Poland after the war ends. The report cited economic hardship and insecurity as the main reasons for potential migration. Poland saw a large influx of Ukrainian asylum seekers, with over 1.36 million arriving in 2022, and as of November 2024, 4.2 million Ukrainians across the EU had been granted temporary protection status. While this initiative has been extended until March 2026, it has faced some opposition from EU member states.
