Media reports Trump’s envoy to transfer Ukraine burden to Europe

(MENAFN) Keith Kellogg, the US envoy for the Ukraine conflict, is set to meet with European officials in the coming weeks to align with President Donald Trump’s objectives, according to reports from Bloomberg and The Telegraph. The diplomatic effort is expected to begin at the Munich Security Conference (MSC) on Friday, as the US seeks to recoup funds spent on the conflict in recent years.

Kellogg’s mission will involve gathering feedback from trans-Atlantic partners before finalizing a strategy for negotiating a peace deal with Russia. He will reportedly seek Europe’s commitment to taking the lead in providing deterrent forces to ensure any peace agreement holds, while also making clear that the US has no plans to send troops to protect Ukraine. Instead, the US is pressing European NATO allies to increase their defense spending.

The diplomatic push follows Trump’s desire to recoup money spent on Ukraine under former President Joe Biden’s administration. Trump has expressed plans to secure access to Ukraine’s natural resources, including rare-earth minerals, as compensation. In a Fox News interview, he claimed to have secured $500 billion in compensation, regardless of the outcome of peace negotiations with Russia.

US Vice President J.D. Vance will lead the American delegation at the MSC and is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky has stated that continued US military support is essential to Ukraine’s defense, while Russian officials have rejected the idea of freezing the conflict and instead call for a comprehensive resolution to the underlying causes of hostilities.
