Tech Giants Unite For Cybersecurity, Launch Safer Internet India Coalition
The coalition, announced on February 11, 2025, brings together major players including Airtel, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Truecaller, and several other prominent digital service providers.
The formation of SII comes at a crucial time as India has emerged as the second most cyber-attacked country globally in the post-COVID era.
With nearly a billion broadband users and an anticipated 600 million new internet users on the horizon, the coalition seeks to address growing challenges in cybersecurity, particularly focusing on protecting vulnerable users from frauds and scams.
Several founding members have highlighted their existing efforts in this space. Airtel launched India's first SPAM-fighting network in September 2024, which identifies over a million unique spammers daily.
Microsoft noted India's leading position in GenAI adoption, with their Global Online Safety Survey 2025 indicating that 65 per cent of Indian respondents have used GenAI, more than double the global average.
The coalition's primary objectives include information sharing across sectors, conducting awareness campaigns, and disseminating best practices to counter cybercrime.
SII will also work closely with government agencies and civil society organisations, sharing early warnings and insights about problematic behavioural trends to promote a comprehensive response to cyber threats.
Koan Advisory Group, an Indian public policy firm, will serve as the secretariat for the coalition.
The initiative reflects a growing recognition that protecting India's expanding digital economy requires coordinated action across the private sector, particularly as cybercriminals continue to adapt their tactics to target both experienced and first-time internet users.
