FBI provides details of 5,000 workers who were involved in Jan 6 cases

(MENAFN) The FBI has complied with a demand from the US Department of Justice (DOJ) to provide details of over 5,000 employees involved in the investigations surrounding the January 6, 2021 Capitol Hill riots. However, the agency withheld the agents' names due to concerns about potential retaliation. In response, some FBI agents have filed lawsuits to protect their identities.

The January 6 riots saw thousands of Donald trump supporters storming the Capitol to disrupt the certification of the 2020 election results, leading to multiple deaths and injuries. Over 1,500 people were charged with federal crimes following the unrest.

In its compliance with the DOJ, the FBI handed over the employees' job titles, ID numbers, and roles in the investigation but kept their names confidential. Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove criticized the FBI for not fully complying with the request, accusing the agency of insubordination. Bove also stated that the DOJ aimed to identify agents who may have acted with partisan intent or misused their positions.

In response to the release of sensitive information, a group of anonymous FBI agents filed a lawsuit against the DOJ and the acting US Attorney General to protect their identities, fearing potential retribution from individuals involved in the January 6 incidents. The agents argue that compiling and potentially publishing the details could expose them to harm.
