Trump imposes sanctions on ICC

(MENAFN) President Donald trump has signed an executive order imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) in response to its investigations into the US and its allies, including Israel. The order accuses the ICC of overstepping its jurisdiction by investigating US personnel and Israeli officials, specifically targeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The sanctions aim to protect Americans from potential harassment and legal action, claiming that the ICC's actions threaten US Sovereignty and national security.

The executive order includes financial sanctions and visa restrictions on those supporting ICC investigations into US citizens or those of its allies. This move comes after the US House of Representatives voted to impose similar sanctions. The US has long been opposed to the ICC's authority, especially after the 2002 American Service-Members' Protection Act, which was designed to shield US personnel from prosecution by international bodies.

The ICC's investigations involve accusations that Israeli officials used starvation as a tactic in Gaza, depriving civilians of basic supplies, which the US argues is outside the court's jurisdiction. While the US praised ICC prosecutor Karim Khan for pursuing charges against Russian President Vladimir Putin, it strongly opposes the court's actions regarding Israel.
