(MENAFN) A heated session in the European Union Parliament (EP) on Tuesday saw strong criticism aimed at European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who was accused of remaining silent on the International Criminal Court's (ICC) arrest warrants for Israeli officials. The ICC recently issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense chief Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Gaza.
Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza. Lawmakers criticized the EU for what they described as a "double standard" in its approach to international law and human rights violations, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The session, titled "The escalating tensions in the Middle East, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank, UNRWA's role in the region, the need for the release of all captives, and ICC arrest warrants for Israeli officials," focused on the EU's role amidst the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank. Hungary’s Minister for European Affairs, Janos Boka, who spoke on behalf of the EU Council, called for maximum restraint from all parties in Gaza and adherence to international humanitarian law.
Boka expressed deep sorrow for the significant civilian casualties, especially among women and children, and reiterated the EU’s call for an immediate ceasefire, the unconditional release of captives, and expanded access to humanitarian aid in the region. He stressed that the humanitarian situation in the Middle East was dire and affirmed that addressing it remained a top priority for the EU Council.
