Iran’s new leader sworn in as nation`s ninth president

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Masoud Pezeshkian was formally sworn in as the ninth president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, marking the beginning of his four-year term. The inauguration took place in the Iranian parliament, with over 80 international dignitaries, including heads of state, ministers, and special representatives, in attendance. The Russian delegation was led by Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma. The ceremony was broadcast live on Iranian state television.

Pezeshkian, who is 69 years old, officially began his presidency on Sunday following an endorsement from Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. This endorsement came after Pezeshkian secured victory in the second round of the presidential election held on July 5.

During his swearing-in ceremony, Pezeshkian delivered his inaugural speech, emphasizing his commitment to lifting Western-imposed sanctions on Iran. He pledged that his administration would engage constructively and effectively with the international community, guided by principles of dignity, wisdom, and expediency. Pezeshkian underscored the need for the global community to leverage the opportunity to address regional and global issues with the involvement of a strong, peace-seeking Iran.

In his address, Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to its peaceful nuclear program, asserting that pressure and sanctions are ineffective in influencing the country. He expressed determination to persist in efforts to remove what he described as "oppressive sanctions" and maintained an optimistic outlook on Iran's future.

Pezeshkian also commented on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza, expressing concern over the supply of Western arms to Israel. He stated that his administration aims to foster a robust and stable region.

The inauguration of Pezeshkian represents a significant moment for Iran as it navigates both domestic and international challenges. His presidency is expected to focus on diplomatic engagement and addressing the economic impact of international sanctions while striving for regional stability.
