Russian electricity supplies to China reach historic low

(MENAFN) Electricity exports from Russia to China have reached unprecedented lows in the first half of this year, according to a report by the business daily Kommersant. Citing data from Chinese customs, the report highlights a dramatic 76 percent decrease in electricity supplies from Russia, with only approximately 465 million kWh delivered between January and June. This sharp decline represents a significant drop compared to the same period last year.

Several factors have contributed to this downturn. Low water levels, which impact hydroelectric power generation, along with insufficient generation capacity and necessary repairs at thermal power plants in Russia’s Far East, have all played a role in the reduced electricity exports. Should this trend persist, there is concern that exports could fall to their lowest level ever by the end of 2024.

To address the dwindling electricity supply, industry experts suggest that new power plants would need to be constructed. Currently, China accounts for only 13 percent of Inter RAO's total electricity exports, reflecting a broader decrease of 31 percent in the company's overall export volumes. This overall decline is largely due to the suspension of trade with the European Union, which had been a significant market for Inter RAO.

In contrast, electricity deliveries to Mongolia have surged by 50 percent, and shipments to Kyrgyzstan have risen by over 30 percent, according to figures provided by Inter RAO. These increases in other markets illustrate a shift in the company’s export strategy amid the challenges faced in the Chinese market.

Earlier this month, Russia and China engaged in discussions to explore ways to boost electricity exports from Russia’s Far East to China. This dialogue underscores the ongoing efforts to address regional supply issues and enhance energy trade between the two countries.
