UN report underlines growing struggles in ending world hunger by 2030

(MENAFN) The goal of eradicating world hunger by 2030 appears increasingly unattainable, as highlighted by a United Nations report released on Wednesday. The "State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World" annual report revealed that the number of people suffering from chronic hunger has remained almost unchanged over the past year. In 2023, approximately 733 million individuals, or one in 11 people globally, faced hunger, with the situation being particularly dire in Africa, where one in five people were affected. The report attributes these alarming figures to a combination of conflicts, climate change, and economic crises.

David Laborde, the director of the Food and Agriculture Organization's Agri-Food Economics Division and a contributor to the survey, expressed concern over the global deterioration of food security despite some regional progress. Laborde pointed out that the world is in a worse position now than it was nine years ago when the 2030 hunger eradication goal was set. He emphasized that challenges such as climate change and regional conflicts have become far more severe than anticipated a decade ago.

The report also issued a stark warning: if current trends persist, around 582 million people will be suffering from chronic malnutrition by the decade's end, with half of them residing in Africa. Additionally, efforts to ensure consistent access to adequate food have faltered significantly over the past three years. In 2023, 29 percent of the global population, equivalent to 2.33 billion people, experienced moderate or severe food insecurity, underscoring the urgent need for intensified and coordinated action to address this escalating crisis.
