US ambassador to UN declares USD60M in additional assistance to Haiti

(MENAFN) On Monday, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, announced a substantial increase in aid for Haiti, including an additional USD60 million in humanitarian assistance and more armored vehicles to enhance the country's security. Thomas-Greenfield, during her visit to the troubled Caribbean nation, expressed pride in the U.S. commitment to helping Haiti. She emphasized that this assistance is aimed at addressing the immediate needs of the Haitian people and supporting their efforts toward achieving a safer, more prosperous, and Democratic future.

Haiti is currently facing a severe humanitarian crisis, with approximately 5.5 million people in urgent need of aid. The crisis has been exacerbated by ongoing civil unrest, disease outbreaks, economic instability, and significant security challenges. The country has been grappling with escalating gang violence and political instability, particularly following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse three years ago. This event has led to intensified violence and power struggles among rival armed groups.

Earlier this year, the situation in the capital, Port-au-Prince, deteriorated significantly as rival gangs took control of large areas of the city, which has reportedly led to the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Armed gangs are now estimated to control around 80 percent of Port-au-Prince, further complicating the security situation.

In response to these challenges, the UN appointed Garry Conille as Haiti's new prime minister in May, hoping to stabilize the country and address the pressing issues of violence and political instability. The U.S. aid, which includes financial support and enhanced security resources, is part of a broader effort to help Haiti navigate its complex and ongoing crisis.
