Spanish authorities arrest 3 hackers for cyberattacks linked to terrorism, NATO targets
(MENAFN) On Saturday, Spanish police announced the arrest of three individuals suspected of conducting cyber attacks targeting Spain and other NATO member countries for terrorist purposes. The arrests were made by the Civil Guard, which stated that the suspects were believed to have engaged in cyber attacks aimed at disrupting public services and strategic sectors. The exact charges against the suspects have not yet been detailed, nor has their detention status been clarified.
The Civil Guard revealed that these cyber attacks affected the websites of various public and private organizations, including those involved in government sectors, vital infrastructure, and essential services in nations supporting Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. In a video shared on social media platform X, police showed footage of a raid conducted at one of the suspects' homes, where a Soviet-era hammer and sickle flag was prominently displayed.
According to the Civil Guard, the attacks were orchestrated by a hacker group known as 'No Name 057 (16)', which emerged following the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war and has since become one of the most active cyber groups. The group has declared its intent to retaliate against perceived anti-Russian actions from Western nations, as stated in its founding declaration.
The arrests took place in various locations, including Manacor in Mallorca, and Huelva and Seville in southern Spain. Authorities have emphasized that the investigation into these cyber attacks is still ongoing.
