Ohmium International Launches 2GW Green Hydrogen Factory In Bengaluru
In a significant move that could reshape the global green hydrogen landscape, U.S.-based Ohmium International has inaugurated a state-of-the-art, giga-level factory for Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers in Doddaballapura, near Bengaluru, India.
This strategic expansion positions India as Ohmium's manufacturing hub for worldwide distribution, challenging industry giants like Siemens and Cummins.
The new 14,000-square-meter facility boasts an initial capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW), with plans to scale up to 4GW. It marks Ohmium's second manufacturing plant in India, consolidating production, quality control, and logistics under one roof.
Arne Ballantine, Global CEO of Ohmium, expressed optimism about the rapidly evolving green hydrogen sector. "With our current project pipeline exceeding 2GW across three continents, we anticipate a shift from megawatt-scale pilot projects to gigawatt-scale installations within the next two years," Ballantine told Fortune India.
The company's expansion aligns with global trends, as industry projections suggest electrolyser manufacturing capacity could surge from the current 8GW per year to over 60GW annually by 2030.
This growth is fueled by more than 500 hydrogen projects announced globally for development between 2021 and 2030, including over 40 giga-scale green hydrogen initiatives.
Ohmium has already secured strategic partnerships and orders in India, including a collaboration with Tata Projects and a 400-megawatt (MW) order from NTPC. The company is also vying for government incentives under India's Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) program.
Ashwin Varma, Ohmium's COO, highlighted the environmental impact of their technology, stating, "2GW of our electrolysers can abate four million tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to the carbon capture of 180 million trees."
As global competition intensifies, with companies like Gujarat Fluorochemicals and Larsen & Toubro entering the PEM electrolyser market, Ohmium's expansion underscores India's growing importance in the green hydrogen revolution.
This development not only bolsters India's manufacturing capabilities but also positions the country as a key player in the global transition to sustainable energy solutions.
