Kremlin replies to news agency allegation of assassination scheme

(MENAFN) The Kremlin has responded to claims made by a news agency that Russia was involved in a plot to assassinate Armin Papperger, the CEO of Germany's Rheinmetall arms manufacturer. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that the allegations are based on anonymous sources and lack substantial evidence. News agency reported that American intelligence had informed their German counterparts about the alleged assassination scheme, which purportedly led to its prevention.

Rheinmetall has become a significant supplier of military equipment to Ukraine since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated in February 2022. The arms manufacturer has provided various weaponry, including Leopard-type tanks. Recently, the German government awarded Rheinmetall an EUR8.5 billion contract for the production of 155mm artillery shells, which are currently in high demand due to the ongoing war. The company is also planning to establish an armored vehicle plant in Ukraine to further support the military efforts.

During a press briefing on Friday, Peskov criticized the credibility of the news agency report, stating, “It is very hard for us to comment on reports from various media outlets that don’t contain any serious argumentation whatsoever, and are based on some anonymous sources.” He described the report as "yet more fakes," suggesting that such claims should not be taken seriously.

In a contrasting view, Papperger spoke to the Financial Times, indicating that while he could not verify the specifics of news agency report, he was inclined to believe in the legitimacy of the claim. “I think CNN is not just looking up at the sky [and making this up],” he remarked, reflecting a sense of concern regarding the threats surrounding his position.

This incident highlights the ongoing tensions and complex dynamics within the context of the Ukraine conflict, especially as companies like Rheinmetall play pivotal roles in supplying arms to Ukraine while also navigating geopolitical threats.
