Zelensky’s UK projectile allegation is inaccurate

(MENAFN) Recent assertions made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding the United Kingdom's approval for attacks deep inside Russia using British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles have been deemed inaccurate, according to a report by The Telegraph. Following a meeting with United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Zelensky announced that he had received permission to employ these missiles against military targets within Russian territory, stating that the two leaders discussed the practical implementation of this decision.

However, The Telegraph clarified that the reality is more complex. A senior defense source indicated that there has been no change in policy regarding the use of these weapons following the transition to a new Labour government. The British publication explained that the situation surrounding the use of air-launched long-range cruise missiles—jointly developed by the United Kingdom and France—has not evolved as Zelensky suggested.

The issue of Ukraine's use of Storm Shadow missiles sparked diplomatic tensions earlier in May when then-Foreign Secretary David Cameron expressed understanding for Ukraine's desire to utilize these weapons beyond what London recognizes as its territory. Cameron's comments, emphasizing Ukraine's right to defend itself, were interpreted by many, including the Russian government, as a tacit approval for such strikes.

British officials later sought to clarify that certain limitations were still imposed on the deployment of Storm Shadow systems. Starmer's recent remarks, stating that it was "up to Ukraine to decide how to deploy" the missiles, prompted the Kremlin to label his comments as "irresponsible and escalatory."

This development highlights the ongoing complexities in the United Kingdom's support for Ukraine amid the conflict with Russia, as both governments navigate the implications of military aid while striving to avoid further escalation of tensions in the region. The differing narratives surrounding missile use underscore the fragile nature of international relations in the context of the ongoing war, as both sides seek to assert their positions while managing the realities on the ground.
