Orban claims that Merkel could have averted Ukraine war

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has criticized current European Union leadership, asserting that the Ukraine conflict would not have escalated into an international war if former German Chancellor Angela Merkel had remained in power. In an interview with Die Welt published on Monday, Orban voiced his dissatisfaction with the handling of the crisis by current European Union leaders, whom he accused of lacking the vision and pragmatism that Merkel embodied.

Orban, known for his advocacy of diplomatic solutions, recently embarked on what he described as a "peace mission" to key actors involved in the Ukraine conflict, including Ukraine, Russia, China, the European Union, and the United States. His discussions in Germany with Chancellor Olaf Scholz revealed stark differences in approach compared to Merkel's tenure, Orban noted, emphasizing his admiration for Merkel's ability to effectively manage conflicts detrimental to Europe.

According to Orban, Merkel possessed the necessary acumen to prevent the current form of the Russia-Ukraine conflict from unfolding. He lamented the decision-making that led to the conflict's escalation into an international crisis, contrasting it with Merkel's approach, which he believed would have isolated and defused tensions rather than exacerbate them.

Reflecting on the failed Minsk peace accords of 2014, brokered by France and Germany to address the conflict in Donbass, Orban argued that Merkel's leadership would have paved a smoother path towards peace today. He suggested that adherence to such agreements could have mitigated the current tensions and facilitated a more stable resolution.

Orban's remarks underscore the ongoing debate within the European Union regarding diplomatic strategies and crisis management, highlighting contrasting approaches between current leaders and Merkel's tenure, which is remembered for its emphasis on pragmatic diplomacy and conflict resolution.
