NATO leaders’ summit points out 10 major issues for Turkey

(MENAFN) At the NATO leaders’ summit in Washington, D.C., several key points emerged that are particularly significant for Turkey, as outlined by a Turkish diplomatic source on Wednesday.

Firstly, following a summit planned for the Netherlands in 2025, Turkey will host the subsequent NATO meeting, underscoring its role and commitment within the alliance.

The summit identified terrorism as the second major threat facing NATO after Russia, which remains the primary and direct security concern for all alliance members.

A critical decision from the previous year's summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, which emphasized that NATO allies should refrain from imposing sanctions on each other, was reaffirmed during this year's gathering.

Recognizing the escalating threat posed by ballistic missiles, NATO reiterated its commitment to ensuring the full protection of all member states, a particularly important assurance for Turkey given its geographical location.

Another significant outcome for Turkey was the agreement that NATO-EU cooperation should be based on existing agreements, aligning with Turkey's policy preferences in fostering cooperative relations.

Furthermore, the summit endorsed flagship projects initiated by certain member states in areas such as support for Ukraine, cyber defense, countering disinformation, and technological advancements. Importantly, these projects are to be integrated into NATO's defense planning process, reinforcing Turkey's view of NATO as the primary security framework.

Acknowledging Turkey's efforts, NATO appreciated Turkey's increase in defense spending, which has returned to 2 percent of its GDP. This development underscores Turkey's commitment to contributing to collective defense efforts within NATO.

In line with these commitments, Turkey reaffirmed its support for enhancing NATO's defense industry capacity, building on agreements reached at previous summits and making new commitments to strengthen collective defense capabilities.
