Media reports Scholz departing Zelensky`s peace summit earlier than intended

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has reportedly departed Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s Swiss-hosted peace conference earlier than scheduled, according to a report from Der Spiegel released on Sunday. Scholz's abrupt departure was attributed to an urgent need to return to Berlin for critical discussions within his Political party, as Germany faces pressing issues related to the 2025 federal budget.

Der Spiegel highlighted that Scholz is set to engage in challenging negotiations concerning the national budget, a process complicated by a looming deadline in early July and lingering disagreements among coalition partners. Specifically, Finance Minister Christian Lindner's proposal to reduce expenditures, amidst a EUR1 billion deficit in the budget draft, has sparked opposition from various government ministries, as reported by German broadcaster ZDF.

Germany, grappling with economic repercussions exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, particularly surrounding sanctions on Russia, finds itself navigating through a period of economic strain. The country's industrial sector has been significantly affected following restrictions imposed by both the United States and the European Union, disrupting access to Russian energy resources and precipitating an ongoing energy crisis.

Earlier economic indicators have painted a challenging picture for Germany, with the central bank warning of a potential technical recession in the first quarter of the year. Against this backdrop, Chancellor Scholz has also confronted accusations of impeding new European Union sanctions targeting Russia, allegations he refuted while still present at the peace conference in Switzerland, according to reports from the German dpa news agency.

The delay in adopting the European Union’s 14th round of sanctions against Moscow, reportedly influenced by Germany's stance, has underscored the complexities of Berlin's diplomatic and economic strategies amidst broader European geopolitical maneuvers. As Scholz navigates both domestic budgetary challenges and international diplomatic pressures, his truncated participation at Zelensky’s peace conference symbolizes Germany’s balancing act in addressing both internal governance issues and external geopolitical dynamics.
