American VP departures from Zelensky`s peace summit prematurely

(MENAFN) United States Vice President Kamala Harris made headlines at Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s recent peace conference in Switzerland when she departed prematurely, just hours after arriving. Harris’s swift exit occurred before the summit's crucial deliberations commenced, prompting a wave of speculation and diplomatic repercussions.

Harris arrived on Saturday afternoon and engaged in bilateral discussions with Zelensky, during which the United States pledged an additional USD1.5 billion in aid to Ukraine, focusing on infrastructure and humanitarian assistance. Her departure, however, raised eyebrows as it preceded the formal proceedings scheduled for Sunday, where global leaders and dignitaries were set to finalize a declaration of support for Ukraine.

According to a leaked copy of the summit's final communique obtained by Reuters, the document squarely placed blame on Russia for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. It also included demands for Russia to grant Ukrainian access to Black Sea ports located on Russian territory and to repatriate ethnic Russian children who were evacuated from Ukraine's Donbass region at the onset of hostilities.

The communique's wording triggered significant discord among attending nations, with approximately a dozen countries, including Brazil, India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, opting not to endorse the document. Prior to the conference, Brazil's presidential adviser Celso Amorim and China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi had jointly expressed reservations, calling for a peace summit recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, with balanced participation and open discussion of various peace proposals.

China notably abstained from sending a delegation to the summit, further highlighting the diplomatic tension surrounding the event. Harris's departure ahead of the main session on Sunday left many questioning the United States' stance and commitment to the peace process, as well as its approach to international diplomacy amid escalating global tensions.

The incident underscores the delicate nature of international efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis and the challenges in achieving consensus among diverse geopolitical actors. As Harris returned to Washington, discussions continued among world leaders about the implications of her departure and the future trajectory of peace negotiations in Eastern Europe.
