An explosion occurred inside a mosque in northern Badakhshan province, Faizabad city, on Thursday during the funeral of the provincial deputy governor who was killed in an attack this week, officials said.

Maazudin Ahmadi, head of the information and culture office, confirmed to Khaama Press and said that an explosion occurred in the Faizabad city of Badakhshan province at around 10: 00 am local time inside the mosque.
Ahmadi added that the explosion had caused casualties but did not provide details.

ISIS, or the Islamic State, claimed responsibility for the car bomb attack on Tuesday that killed the Taliban deputy governor and his driver.

ISIS claimed responsibility and stated they had detonated a bomb targeting the deputy governor Mawlavi Nisar Ahamd Ahmadi, including his driver and six injured others.

The deputy governor's vehicle was attacked while it was on its way to a court in Faizabad, the provincial capital of Badakhshan province.

Since the Taliban seized power in August 2021, ISIS has posed a serious security threat to Afghanistan's de facto government. Over the previous close to two years, the insurgency combatants have been behind several violent attacks against the Russian Embassy, Pakistan's diplomatic mission, and a Chinese-run hotel in the centre of Kabul.

The attacks on the foreign diplomatic missions in the capital city of Kabul resulted in the deaths and injuries of several foreigners and ordinary people in the country.
