US Stock Exchanges Begin Week on Cautious Note as Dow Jones, S&P 500 Close Lower


(MENAFN) On Monday, major US stock exchanges experienced a subdued start to the week as they closed with losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by nearly 200 points or 0.59 percent, settling at 33,562. Similarly, the S&P 500 dropped eight points or 0.2 percent, finishing at 4,273. The Nasdaq also saw a slight dip of 11 points or 0.09 percent, concluding the session at 13,229.

Investor concerns were reflected in the VIX volatility index, often referred to as the fear index, which saw a modest increase of 0.9 percent to reach 14.73. Concurrently, the 10-year US Treasury yield exhibited a decrease of 0.14 percent to stand at 3.690 percent.

Currency markets showed minimal movement, with the dollar index remaining relatively unchanged at 104.03. The euro displayed marginal fluctuations, almost maintaining its position at USD1.0713 against the US dollar.

In the realm of precious metals, gold experienced a modest rise of 0.7 percent, reaching USD1,962 per ounce. Conversely, silver saw a slight reduction of 0.2 percent, settling at USD23.57.

Oil prices observed a slight increase of approximately 0.3 percent. The global benchmark, Brent crude, stood at USD76.44 per barrel, while the US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate crude, closed at USD71.88.

As the trading day concluded, market participants exhibited caution, resulting in a downward trend across major stock indices. Various factors, including global economic indicators and geopolitical developments, continue to shape market sentiment and drive investor behavior in the ever-changing landscape of financial markets.
