Istanbul hosts Global Aviation Leaders for IATA's 79th Annual General Meeting

(MENAFN) Aviation leaders from around the world have gathered in Istanbul, Turkiye, for the 79th annual general meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which commenced on June 4. Over the course of three days, the event will bring together industry experts from IATA's 300-member airlines, government officials, strategic partners, and equipment suppliers.

The primary focus of the meeting is to assess the aviation industry's recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and chart a path towards a more sustainable future. Participants will engage in discussions on various topics, including leveraging technology for enhanced efficiency, advancing modern retailing practices, improving facilitation, and addressing common regulatory challenges faced by airlines. Willie Walsh, the director general of IATA, highlighted these objectives prior to the start of the event, emphasizing the importance of planning for sustainable growth.

This marks the second time that Istanbul has hosted IATA's annual general meeting since 2008. The country has exhibited a strong rebound following the challenges posed by the pandemic. In 2022, travel to and from Turkiye witnessed an impressive increase of nearly 60 percent compared to the previous year, positioning the country as the seventh-largest international passenger market globally, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).

Walsh stressed the vital role of aviation in connecting the world, especially in the face of deepening geopolitical divisions. He emphasized the need for profitable, safe, efficient, and sustainable airlines to fulfill this crucial mission. The outcomes and decisions made during IATA's annual general meeting are expected to set the direction for even more effective global connectivity.
