(MENAFN) Dutch international striker Quincy Promes, who is currently facing trial in the Netherlands for a separate incident involving the stabbing of a cousin, has now been charged with importing cocaine. The public prosecutor's office revealed the charges on Tuesday, stating that Promes and another Dutchman, both aged 31, are accused of importing a significant quantity of cocaine, estimated to be "several hundred kilos," in January 2020. The importation is alleged to have taken place through the port of Antwerp in Belgium.
According to reports, a preliminary hearing for the case is scheduled for June 5. However, Promes will not be present at the hearing due to contractual obligations with his club, Spartak Moscow, as the Russian Premier League season concludes on Saturday.
This recent charge comes after the Dutch Public Prosecutor's Office had already sought a two-year prison sentence for Promes in March. The previous case involves an incident where Promes is accused of injuring a cousin in the knee with a knife during a fight that took place after a family reunion in Abcoude, near Amsterdam, in July 2020.
The charges against Promes mark a significant legal ordeal for the footballer, as he faces multiple legal proceedings simultaneously. The outcome of both cases will determine the consequences he will face, including potential legal penalties and repercussions in his football career.
