Eni, RINA Join Forces to Advance Energy Transition, Decarbonization in Maritime Transport

(MENAFN) Eni, an Italian multinational energy company, and RINA, an international consultancy specializing in inspection, certification, and engineering, have entered into a partnership to collaborate on initiatives aimed at advancing the energy transition and decarbonization efforts in their respective operations, with a particular focus on maritime transport. This collaboration was announced by Eni on Monday.

The agreement primarily revolves around the utilization of hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuel, which is produced by Eni in its biorefineries located in Venice and Gela. The partnership aims to explore and develop initiatives related to the logistics and value chain of new energy carriers, including "blue" or "green" hydrogen and ammonia derived from biogenics. These initiatives will involve the adoption of certified methods for calculating the taxonomic emissions benefits that these energy carriers will generate.

Furthermore, as part of their collaborative efforts, Eni and RINA will also consider conducting experiments and pilot projects focused on the onboard capture of CO2 emissions. By doing so, they aim to contribute further to the sustainability objectives of the naval sector.

Giuseppe Ricci, the chief operating officer for Energy Evolution at Eni, expressed his belief that both companies possess significant expertise and technological capabilities that can play a crucial role in decarbonizing maritime transport. Through their partnership, Eni and RINA seek to leverage their collective strengths to make substantial contributions in this area.

This collaboration between Eni and RINA highlights their shared commitment to driving the energy transition and reducing carbon emissions, particularly in the maritime sector. By joining forces, they aim to explore innovative solutions, adopt sustainable energy carriers, and advance the development of environmentally friendly practices in order to contribute to a greener future.
