Musk needs to comply with EU commissioner’s obligations to avoid financial losses

(MENAFN) On Friday European Commissioner Thierry Breton threatened Twitter Chief Executive Elon Musk with “enforcement” in a tweet following Musk`s announcement that he was taking Twitter out of the EU’s voluntary Code of Practice on Disinformation, cautioning that he was not getting away with ease.

Affirming Twitter had removed the anti-disinformation mechanism, Breton said in a tweet, “You can run but you can’t hide,” assuring “our teams will be ready for enforcement.”

“Beyond voluntary commitments, fighting disinformation will be legal obligation under [the Digital Service Act] as of August 25,” the spokesman reminded Musk, regarding the arrival of legislation that is going to need Twitter and seven other social media podiums to “fight disinformation” in the European Union or deal with enormous penalties up to 6 percent of the firm`s yearly profit.

Twitter joined the CPD in 2018 under previous Chief Executive Jack Dorsey. The DSA includes the (voluntary) Code of Practice into an obligatory code of manner for very large online podiums, debating that they need to hold accountability for keeping the internet secure for democracy or deal with disastrous economic consequences. Twitter has three months to fulfill these requirements.
