(MENAFN) A massive storm system that produced several deadly tornadoes in the Midwest and South on Friday continued to wreak havoc on Saturday, with at least one person killed in Delaware as a result of a tornado. The tornado caused a structure to collapse near the town of Greenwood, with cell phone videos posted by the Sussex County government showing a funnel cloud moving through the area. Tens of thousands of customers were also left without power across several states.
Reports from nearby Bridgeville, Delaware, indicated multiple vehicle accidents and entrapments, as well as gas leaks and downed power lines. However, it was not immediately clear whether there were any injuries beyond the one fatality.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch Saturday evening for parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York City. The storm system had already caused at least 26 deaths across eight states, including Illinois, Tennessee, Arkansas, Indiana, Alabama, Ohio, and Mississippi.
During a heavy metal concert in Illinois on Friday, a theater roof collapsed during a tornado, killing one person and injuring about 40 others. Earlier in the day, President Joe Biden had toured the damage from a tornado that had struck Mississippi the previous week, leaving at least 21 people dead.
As of Saturday night, more than 201,000 customers in Pennsylvania were without power, along with over 109,000 in Ohio, 94,000 in Virginia, 51,000 in West Virginia, and 46,000 in North Carolina, according to utility tracker PowerOutage.us.
The devastating storm system serves as a stark reminder of the destructive power of natural disasters and the importance of being prepared for emergencies. It also highlights the need for continued efforts to mitigate climate change and reduce the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.
