(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has expressed his disappointment over the lack of direct communication between himself and Chinese leader Xi Jinping since Russia's military offensive against Ukraine began last year. In an interview with the Associated Press, Zelensky stated his desire to rectify the situation, saying "We are ready to see him here... I want to speak with him." Despite having had contact with Xi Jinping prior to the full-scale war, Zelensky has not had the opportunity to speak with him in over a year.
Last month, China unveiled a 12-point roadmap for ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The proposal calls for a ceasefire and the establishment of a "sustainable European security architecture," rather than imposing sanctions and applying maximum pressure on Russia to force a solution. China has attempted to play a constructive role in the crisis, resisting pressure from the United States to condemn Russia and join in the West's anti-Russia sanctions.
US officials have dismissed the Chinese proposal as an offer that would only benefit Moscow. However, Zelensky has expressed interest in exploring China's proposed roadmap and potentially working with China to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict. With tensions between Ukraine and Russia remaining high, and the international community continuing to grapple with the ongoing crisis, direct communication between Zelensky and Xi Jinping may prove crucial in achieving a lasting solution.
