Train carrying raw material derails in California, prompting investigation, hazmat response

(MENAFN) San Bernardino County fire officials reported that a train carrying raw material derailed in California on Monday, causing multiple cars containing iron ore to topple over. The Union Pacific train did not have any passengers on board at the time of the derailment. According to Union Pacific officials, 55 train cars, including two locomotives, derailed at around 8:30 a.m. local time. Fortunately, there were no injuries and no active fires, and officials have confirmed that there is no threat to the public or the environment.

Hazmat officials are investigating a minor leak that occurred in one of the locomotives. In a statement to ABC News, Union Pacific confirmed that the derailed cars did contain iron ore, which spilled out as a result of the accident. However, the company has stated that the spilled material is not hazardous and that there were no other hazardous materials on the train. The crew was also said to be unharmed.

Union Pacific has stated that it is currently investigating the cause of the derailment. This incident comes just over a month after a Norfolk Southern foreign train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, which resulted in the release of vinyl chloride, ethyl acrylate, and isobutylene into the environment. While there is no indication that this most recent derailment will result in any environmental damage, authorities are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of nearby residents and the surrounding area. The impact of this derailment on train schedules and the transportation of raw materials by rail in California remains to be seen.
