Israeli protests over PM's judicial overhaul plan, defense minister's firing

(MENAFN) On Sunday night, tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets across the country to express their anger over the sudden firing of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The dismissal of Gallant, who had spoken out against the prime minister's plans to overhaul the judiciary, signaled that Netanyahu and his allies were determined to push ahead with their controversial plans despite mounting opposition.

Protests erupted in Tel Aviv, with demonstrators blocking a major highway and lighting large bonfires, while police clashed with protesters outside Netanyahu's private home in Jerusalem. The unrest deepened the crisis that has been brewing for months over Netanyahu's proposed judicial reforms, which have sparked mass protests and raised concerns among business leaders, former security chiefs, and close allies like the United States.

Gallant's objections to the overhaul plan were particularly significant, as he was the first senior member of the ruling Likud party to speak out against it. He warned that the deep divisions over the issue were threatening to weaken the military. However, as the protests continued late into the night, other Likud ministers began to indicate a willingness to slow down the push for reform. Netanyahu confidant and Culture Minister Micky Zohar stated that the party would support the prime minister if he decided to pause the judicial overhaul.
