Child Marriages in Jordan Decrease by 27.5 Percent in 2022

(MENAFN) The number of child marriages in Jordan decreased by 27.5 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year, according to a report by the Sisterhood is Global Institute (SIGI) cited by Roya News. The report revealed that the number of child marriages decreased from 8,039 in 2021 to 5,824 in 2022.

Jordan's Supreme Judge Department also released a report that showed a 15.2 percent decrease in the total number of marriage contracts in 2022, with 63,834 contracts compared to 75,360 in 2021. SIGI cited Jordan's economic conditions as one of the reasons for the decrease in child marriages, as economic difficulties have made it harder for families to afford the expenses associated with marriage.

However, SIGI also noted that economic conditions have limited women's labor-force participation and increased their unemployment rates. The institute emphasized that child marriage is a form of abuse that must be stopped.

The decrease in child marriages in Jordan is a positive development, as child marriage has serious negative consequences for young girls, including the risk of early pregnancy, social isolation, and limited access to education and other opportunities. The efforts to decrease child marriage in Jordan should be continued and expanded to ensure that all girls have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
