UN Security Council to Vote on Russian Resolution Calling for Commission to Investigate Nord Stream Pipeline Explosions

(MENAFN) The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on a resolution proposed by Russia, which calls for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to establish a commission to investigate the explosions that occurred at the Nord Stream gas pipelines in September 2020. The vote is scheduled to take place on Monday at 19:00 GMT.

Russia's draft resolution was presented to the UN Security Council in February, and it requests the establishment of an international independent commission to verify allegations made by US journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner Seymour Hersh. Hersh claimed that the explosions were organized by the United States with the support of Norway.

The resolution also calls on UN member states, including those conducting their own investigations, to cooperate by sharing any relevant information with the commission. Additionally, the document requires the commission to consist of impartial and experienced experts, and urges Guterres to report to the Council within 30 days with recommendations for the commission's creation.

Russian Deputy Permanent Representative Dmitry Polyanskiy has stated that China will co-author the UN Security Council resolution. The Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines were built to deliver gas under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany, and were hit by explosions last September. Nord Stream AG, the operator of the pipelines, has stated that the damage was unprecedented, and that it was impossible to estimate how long repairs might take.

The proposed commission would investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosions, and provide an impartial and objective analysis of the events. The resolution highlights the importance of international cooperation and transparency in addressing incidents that have the potential to impact global energy security. The vote on the resolution will be closely watched by countries around the world, as it could have significant implications for the future of the Nord Stream pipelines and the energy sector as a whole.
