(MENAFN) NEOM, the USD500 billion megaproject to create a high-tech hub on Saudi Arabia's northwest Red Sea coast, will have a dedicated airline by the end of 2024, according to Klaus Goersch, the CEO of NEOM Airlines. The airline promises to provide passengers with a "completely different travel experience" that is both futuristic and efficient. The development of the airline is part of Saudi Arabia's efforts to boost its aviation sector, with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announcing a new carrier, Riyadh Air, earlier this month, which will benefit from a USD37 billion aircraft deal with US firm Boeing.
Goersch, who has previously served as COO of British Airways and Air Canada, outlined his ambitious vision for NEOM Airlines in a blog post, describing it as a "new future" for air travel. He envisions a travel experience where bags are collected from passengers' homes or offices and delivered to their destination, biometrics are advanced enough to recognize passengers via facial recognition, and security clearance is automated without the need for a visa or gate. Passengers will also be able to change their flights without cost, collect loyalty points at the airport, and enjoy lounge-style services throughout the airport.
NEOM Airlines will initially retrofit existing aircraft before shifting to new planes. "Come 2026 onwards, there will be new innovative aircraft – whether it be electric, hydrogen-powered or supersonic – and next-generation interiors coming online from us," Goersch wrote, adding that the airline is already in discussions with plane, interior, and seat manufacturers. The airline's ambition is for every flight to have some sustainable fuel onboard, originating from mixing facilities at NEOM, in line with the project's environmentally-friendly pledge. The airline will also source food locally and minimize the use of single-use plastics.
NEOM Airlines promises to offer a completely different and futuristic travel experience to passengers, setting the airline apart from other carriers. The idea of having everything from baggage collection to catering and loyalty points owned by the same company is innovative and unique. The airline's pledge to sustainability, from fuel sourcing to catering, aligns with NEOM's commitment to being environmentally-friendly. NEOM Airlines is expected to boost Saudi Arabia's aviation sector, and its launch is a significant step towards the realization of NEOM's vision of becoming a high-tech hub.
