(MENAFN) The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Iran have agreed to meet soon to prepare for the reopening of embassies and consulates between the two countries. The phone call between Saudi Arabia's Faisal bin Farhan and Iran's Hossein Amir Abdollahian took place on Tuesday, with the two sides exchanging greetings on the occasion of Ramadan.
The restoration of mutual ties and the plan to reopen embassies and consulates were announced on March 10, following Chinese-brokered talks between the two countries. However, no further details have been disclosed about the upcoming meeting.
In 2016, Saudi Arabia severed its relations with Iran after attacks on its embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad, protesting against the execution of Saudi Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr on charges of "terrorism." The reopening of embassies and consulates between the two countries marks a significant step towards resolving their longstanding conflicts.
This move could have far-reaching implications for the region, as Saudi Arabia and Iran are key players in the Middle East. The reopening of embassies and consulates could lead to increased cooperation and dialogue, which could help ease tensions and promote stability in the region.
