(MENAFN) Train service between the Dutch cities of Den Bosch and Boxtel has been halted due to badgers digging under the tracks, raising concerns about passenger safety. The rail operator ProRail explained that the digging could cause the rails to subside, putting train traffic at risk. A similar issue occurred earlier this month near Molkwerum, causing a line to be out of service until next month.
Badgers are a protected species in the Netherlands, and operators need special permission to move or disturb their habitats. ProRail is seeking a permit to relocate the animals, but has complained about the slow application process. CEO John Voppen has appealed to authorities to speed up the procedure so normal rail services can resume.
The incident highlights the challenges of balancing conservation efforts with infrastructure development and maintenance. While protecting endangered species is important, disruptions to transportation can have significant economic and social impacts. Finding a solution that prioritizes both environmental and human needs will require cooperation and innovation from all stakeholders involved.
