Algerian President Regrets "Point of No Return" in Relations with Morocco

(MENAFN) Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his regret that relations with neighboring Morocco have reached a point of "no return." In an interview with Al Jazeera, Tebboune stated that Algeria's position was a reaction to Morocco's "hostile tendencies," an accusation denied by Moroccan authorities. In August 2021, Algeria severed diplomatic relations with Morocco, leading to tensions between the two countries.

The issue of Western Sahara has been a contentious issue between Morocco and Algeria for years, with Algeria supporting independence for the territory while Morocco claims sovereignty over it. The recent recall of ambassadors between Algeria and Spain was also related to the Western Sahara conflict, with Algeria accusing Spain of supporting Morocco's self-rule proposal.

Tebboune also discussed Algeria's role in the Ukrainian crisis, stating that his country is qualified to play the role of mediator due to its credibility. He confirmed that his visit to Russia is still ongoing and will take place in May at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Regarding the diplomatic crisis with France, Tebboune stated that relations with Paris are "fluctuating" but confirmed that the Algerian ambassador will return to France within days after being summoned for consultations weeks ago.

The tensions between Algeria and its neighboring countries highlight the complex geopolitical landscape in the region and the challenges of managing competing interests and alliances. As a country with a history of mediation in regional conflicts, Algeria's potential role in the Ukrainian crisis may be significant. However, its strained relations with neighboring countries, including Morocco and Spain, may limit its ability to act as a mediator. The situation underscores the need for continued efforts to promote dialogue and cooperation to address regional challenges and maintain stability in the region.
