Newly Developed DNA Evidence Leads to Arrests in 1992 Baby Murder Case

(MENAFN) Nearly 30 years after the discovery of a baby's body in a Mississippi trash bin, new DNA evidence has led investigators to the parents of the infant, who are now facing charges of first-degree murder. The baby's body was found on April 15, 1992, in a trash bin behind a local pizzeria in Picayune, Mississippi, by a farmer who was looking to feed his animals. The autopsy showed that the infant was born prematurely on the day it was found and had lived for only a few minutes before being smothered.

The case remained unsolved until August 2021 when Picayune Police reopened the investigation. Advanced DNA technology helped develop suspects by building profiles and fingerprints from preserved evidence. Inga Johansen Carriere, 50, of Avondale, and Andrew K. Carriere II, 50, of River Ridge, were identified as suspects and arrested for first-degree murder. They are being held without bond at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Facility and awaiting extradition to Mississippi.

The investigation revealed that the crime took place in Louisiana, and the baby's body was dumped in Mississippi. The collaboration between the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Louisiana State Police, and Picayune Police led to the breakthrough in the case. The unidentified infant was buried at Lee's Chapel Baptist Church, and the community donated a headstone that reads "Heavens Angel."

Freddy Drennan, the former Picayune police chief who was in charge when the baby was found, said that he never forgot about the case. He added that law enforcement officers don't work these cases; they live them. He had always hoped that the case would be solved and closure would be given to the family.

Authorities said that without the documentation and evidence collected and preserved in 1992, this case would not have been solved. This breakthrough is a testament to the advancements in forensic technology and the dedication of law enforcement agencies to bring justice to victims and their families. The case remains under investigation, and it is unknown whether the suspects have an attorney who can speak on their behalf.
