Death toll climbs following devastating earthquake in Turkey


(MENAFN) At around 4 a.m. on Monday, a series of strong earthquakes slammed southern Turkey, leaving hundreds of people dead and thousands wounded.

Vice President Fuat Oktay reports that the catastrophe has resulted in at least 284 fatalities and 2,323 injuries. He claimed that at least 1,710 structures were damaged by the earthquake.

According to Oktay, there have been recorded fatalities in several Turkish provinces. Antep province, where at least 80 people died and 581 structures were damaged, leads the death toll charts. 70 people also perished in Kahramanmaras, 47 in Malatya, 14 in Diyarbakir, 10 in Adana, 8 in Kilis, and 4 in Hatay as a result of the earthquake.

Based on the local governor, at least 34 structures were demolished and five people were murdered in the province of Osmaniye alone. As rescuers look for survivors, additional deaths are certain. Moreover, after the earthquakes, a sizable number of persons are still unaccounted for.
