DUBAI, 6th February, 2023 (WAM) -- Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) participated in a campaign to clean the beach, and plant mangroves at the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary, organised by the Emirates Marine Environmental Group.

The move is in conjunction with the National Environment Day, observed on 4th February each year, and is held this year under the theme 'Towards a Sustainable Future'.
More than 250 employees and their families participated in the event. The campaign succeeded in removing more than 1,500 kilograms of garbage from the reserve's beaches, one of the most important nature reserves in Dubai. The participants planted 310 mangroves as well.

DEWA also launched an awareness campaign through its internal channels and its official pages on social media websites to raise awareness among employees and customers about the importance of preserving precious natural resources. DEWA organised virtual environmental lectures in Arabic and English, in cooperation with Dubai Municipality, to highlight the most important natural reserves in the UAE and Dubai.

Speaking on the occasion, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, highlighted DEWA's keenness to support national environmental activities that contribute to achieving a sustainable environment in terms of air quality, and preserving natural and water resources, by encouraging the use of nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Al Tayer added,“We are committed to achieving the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100 percent of Dubai's total power production capacity from clean energy sources by 2050. We also support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

“At DEWA, we are working to promote a responsible and sustainable lifestyle, encourage the use of digital channels and green mobility, and raise the efficiency of electricity and water consumption. DEWA supports the national efforts and goals to preserve natural resources, including the goal set by the wise leadership to plant 100 million mangroves by 2030, and to enhance the sustainability of these forests. Mangroves play a fundamental role in protecting the coasts of the UAE and are natural habitats for biodiversity.”
