Doha: A tradition started in Qatar over 10 years ago by Doha College, the illustrious Battle of the Bands returned to its original host for the 2023 edition.

The first such event to be held post-pandemic and in Doha College's new campus in Al Wajba, it attracted 12 bands from 9 schools from across the country, following a pre-selection round within the participating schools.

It was a spectacular afternoon that showcased a very eclectic taste, covering genres from heavy metal to raggae, and spanning across many decades of music.

The contestants ranged in age from 12 to 18 but the standards were extremely high, with many young musicians displaying breath-taking virtuosity, well beyond their years.

The judging panel comprised Vasileios Gkouzounas, who took on the adjudicating duties for the fourth time in six years, Raelene Gibson and Gary Greig. Vasileios admitted that the task was difficult, remarking:“How can someone judge these wonderful kids, who worked so hard and found the courage to go up on stage in front of hundreds of people and give their heart and soul? They are all winners, and celebrating music will always be a win. Congratulations to all the bands and their mentors who made this event so memorable!”

Doha College's“Experimental BBQ” was recognised as the competition's“Rising Stars,” Dukhan English School won third place, GEMS American Academy came second, and Oryx International School won the top spot with a creative spin on Michael Jackson's infamous“Thriller.” The coveted prize is the opportunity to play live at the upcoming Rockaway Beach Festival.

Steph Gomma, Director of music at Doha College, thanked the participating schools for their contributions. She commented:“All the music teachers provided invaluable support throughout the entire Battle of the Bands process. Congratulations to all the bands for the wonderful musical performances, filled with stage presence and energy. We are absolutely delighted to be back with live performances, collaborating with other schools here in Qatar, and we're so excited for what the future holds in that regard. Special congratulations go to Oryx International School, and here's to next year!”
