QC Hosts Workshop On Global Barcoding

The Qatar Chamber (QC), yesterday hosted an event aiming to bolster the business sector in the country, inviting many Qatari entrepreneurs presenting on the usage of international barcode and their part in enhancing businesses for the companies.

The event entitled 'Introducing the global standards for numbering (GS1) and the global standards system (GS1 System) and the various applications for using barcodes and their role in developing the business sector for Qatari companies' was held at the Qatar Chamber headquarters in collaboration with Qatar Development Bank and Qatar's coding and Tracking Office (GS1 Qatar Office).

The event was attended by many officials from various Qatari firms and media partners. The keynote speech of the Workshop was presented by Ibrahim Assaf, a specialist in the global standards system, and a certified auditor for global tracking systems.

During the workshop, he introduced the GS1, which is a Belgium-based company known as Global Standards with an aspiration to unify the global language of business.

The workshop also highlighted the global standards for coding and the mechanisms of their use in numerous barcode applications that cover significant areas including trade, healthcare, transportation, retail, logistics, and others.

Various services the GS1 offers to the organisations in Qatar were then outlined during the workshop in addition to the GS1, GS1 system, and different applications of using the barcodes and how they positively impact helping the firms boost their business projects in the country.

The presentation also included focusing on the global keys used for the distinctive mark project and the mechanisms for their extraction and use. Assaf mentioned that GSI Qatar is a non-profit organisation launched to grant membership to Qatari manufacturers, commercial sectors, the retail industry, and producers in order to use the global standards system for coding.

He also accentuated the vitality of international standards and mechanisms for their use during many other phases through the supply chain, conducting specialised training courses, offering technical advice to improve supply chain operations, organise workshops, seminars, and meetings with the public and private sectors, and present successful experiences across the globe.

The session also delineated some of the major outputs by discussing the mechanisms of registering and acquiring membership in the GS1 Qatar along with the rules for providing global barcodes in addition to some of the essential challenges that encounter commercial partners in the region.
