(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) Khartoum, Jan. 30, 2023, SPA -- President of Sudan's Sovereignty Council Gen. Abdulfattah Al-Burhan, who is also Commander-in-chief of Sudan's Armed Forces, inaugurated the Custodian of Two Holy Mosques Grant to implement 500 solar-operated artesian water stations in different states of the country.
The project was financed by the Saudi Development Fund (SDF) at a cost of $100 million, official figures said.
In a dedication ceremony, attended by the Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to Sudan Ali bin Hassan Jafar, and Director General of Arab Countries Projects Department at SDF Eng. Bandar bin Abdullah Al-Obeid, Gen. Al-Burahn extended, on behalf of the government and people of Sudan, thanks to and appreciation of the the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and HRH the Crown Prince for their keenness and continuing support for the Sudanese people, reiterating the State's keenness to achieve development and implement developmental and service projects in the rural areas and noting the positive impact of such projects offered by SDF on the development march and the Sudanese people.
For his part, Eng. Al-Obeid said the project comes within the interest of the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through SDF to support the sisterly Republic of The Sudan to contribute reaching a sustainable water and food security, lauding the joint developmental relations with Sudan over more than 48 years, wishing Sudan and its people increasing progress, growth and prosperity.
For his part, Ambassador Jafar underscored the importance of this project, citing its positive impact on peoples' daily life.
Today's announcement to start phase one to dig 500 wells, is part of a 1300 artesian-well project, official reports said, adding that it is designed to provide around 120000 cu.m. daily of population needs of potable water in addition to developing water resources in the Sudanese rural areas away from the River Nile and its tributraries.
Nearly three million people are expected to benefit from underground water in addition to that the project supports the social and economic sectors to achieve the objectives of the sustainable development and reach water and food security in Sudan, the report said.
The project comes within the interest of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since 1975 to provide support for development sectors in Sudan through SDF, the report said, citing that SDF has provided 19 developmental programs and projects at a total cost of $866 million in addition to three grants worth $117million as an extension of the historic firm relations and close partnership between the two sisterly countries and peoples.
