By Majid Nabi

Srinagar- Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Asad Wednesday said that nearly 65,000 new voters have been registered in the revised photo electoral rolls in Srinagar city as part of the special summary revision-2022.

DC said the district administration had received a total of 80,000 forms for inclusion of fresh voters into the revised electoral rolls while 15,000 forms had been received for deletion purposes.

“We had received a total of 80,000 forms for addition during recently concluded Special Summary Revision-2022, while 15,000 forms were received for deletion. A total of nearly 65,000 fresh voters have been registered in the revised electoral rolls in Srinagar city,” DC Srinagar told the media here.

Pertinently, the Special Summary Revision of photo electoral rolls was held in Jammu and Kashmir last year, first time after the abrogation of special constitutional position of the erstwhile state in 2019.

On the ongoing anti-encroachment drive to free State land from encroachers, Assad said that a total of 333 kanals illegally occupied land has been retrieved in Srinagar till date.

DC said the administration has clear-cut directions from the Lieutenant Governor not to touch 'landless or poor' people during the ongoing drive. He said people have been supporting the government in retrieving state land from the encroachers.

“A total of 333 kanals of illegally occupied land was retrieved in Srinagar city so far. Interestingly, people have been supporting the government in retrieving the state land, in fact registering complaints vis-à-vis encroachments. We are grateful to the people for supporting the administration,” he said, adding landless or poor will not be touched.

He said the administration follows LG's directions not to harass poor people in letter and spirit as the drive has been initiated against the influential having encroached huge tracts of state land in parts of the UT.

“As the LG is on record to say that the poor will not be touched, administration meticulously follows his directions. People came forward and appreciated the government during the anti-encroachment drive in Eidgah and central Shalteng areas recently,” he added.
