(MENAFN) Innocent Britons can be spied on by Beijing thanks to Chinese-made microchips used in internet-of-things equipment like smart fridges, vehicles, and televisions, according to a think tank OODA paper reviewed by the United Kingdom Telegraph on Monday.
According to the analysis, the harm presented by Chinese-made cellular IoTs is larger than the threat posed by Chinese-made Huawei 5G components, which the United Kingdom government opted to exclude from Britain's 5G network by the year 2027 in response to strong United States pressure.
Every IoT-connected product, including computers, smartwatches, vehicles, refrigerators, smart meters, doorbell cameras, credit card readers, and even lightbulbs, has these "Trojan horse" modules. They are made to gather use information and communicate it back to the maker using 5G networks, and they may give you a rather in-depth portrait of a person, a neighborhood, or an entire sector.
The research cautions that the Chinese firms that control the market must provide that information to the Chinese government upon request. A fear that became very real earlier this month when the devices were discovered in ministerial cars in the United Kingdom came true: such a wealth of data could be used to identify and surveil potential intelligence sources or other VIPs, pinpointing who handles sensitive information and which potential avenues for blackmail or bribery might work on them.
