Dhaka: Due to dense fog this winter, the movement of aircraft at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital is being disrupted. To overcome the crisis, Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh has taken the initiative to upgrade the Instrument Landing System (ILS) to Category-2 at four airports of the country.

Air Vice Marshal M Mafidur Rahman, Chairman of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh said this at press conference following the opening ceremony of the 30th steering committee of the Cooperative Development of Operational Safety and Continuing Airworthiness Programme, South Asia (COSCAP-SA) at a city hotel on January 24.

CAAB Chairman mentioned,“Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet and Cox's Bazar – these four airports of the country are being upgraded to ILS Category-2. The work at Sylhet airport has already been completed with only calibration work left now, while Chattogram airport's ILS upgradation will be over by the end of 2024.”

“Also, it will be done at Dhaka Airport within the next three months,” he claimed, adding,“The equipment has already arrived at Dhaka Airport. Some additional lighting needs to be in place. We are working in this regard.”

“Once the runway expansion of Cox's Bazar airport over the sea is completed, ILS upgradation will begin there,” he stressed.

The three-day long 30th Steering Committee meeting of COSCAP-SA is currently underway and will run till January 26.

The meeting is being held to take decisions on technical issues related to Aviation Safety and Air Ordinance, including enhancing regional cooperation in the field of civil aviation among South Asian countries.
