(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ALGIERS, Jan 13 (KUNA) -- Algerian Prime Minister Aimene Benabderrahmane, on behalf of President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, declared open the seventh African Nations Championship (CHAN 2022) on Friday.
Since its first edition in 2007, the biennial championship has helped bring the nations of Africa closer to each other, Benabderrahmane said in opening remarks.
'Through hosting this edition of the championship, Algeria seeks to deepen the values of coexistence and cultural exchanges with fellow African nations,' he added.
The opening ceremony, held in Nelson-Mandela Stadium, in Baraki district, to the east of the capital city of Algiers, gathered dozens of senior dignitaries, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, CAF President Patrice Motsepe, President of the Algerian Federation of Football (FAF) Djahid Zefizef and Zwelivelile Mandela - the grandson of South African iconic leader Nelson Mandela.
The opening (Group A) game ended with Algeria beating Libya 1-0.
CHAN 2022, co-organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FAF, runs until February 4, with participating teams consisting of players in their respective national league competitions. (end)
