Qatar's Higher Institutions Offer 400 Academic Programmes

Doha: As many as 34 higher institutions are operating in Qatar, offering over 400 academic programmes, said an official.

“The number of students in higher institutions has reached 40,572 in the current academic year, recording 13 percent increase, compared to the previous academic year,” said Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim bin Saleh Al Nuaimi.

Speaking in a Qatar TV programme recently, he said that 3,243 students are registered in the scholarship list of the Ministry who are pursuing their higher studies inside Qatar and abroad.

Speaking about University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST), he said that this is first specialised university in Qatar for science and technology.

“UDST like Qatar University is providing educational output and high quality technical specialisations to the job market,” said Al Nuaimi.

He said that the university is specialised in the fields of health, technology and accountancy, among others.“About 3,000 students are enrolled in the UDST of different nationalities with a large number of Qatari students,” said Al Nuaimi.

He said that the higher education sector of the country has witnessed fast growth.“We have 34 government and private higher institutions - colleges and universities - which are offering over 400 academic programmes, including Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees,” said Al Nuaimi.

He said that these universities are providing a big database of academic programmes to serve the job market contributing greatly in the development of Qatar in future.

Speaking about the scholarships, he said that the scholarship list of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education includes 3,243 students pursuing their higher studies inside Qatar and abroad for this academic year.

“A total of 933 students joined to the scholarship programme of the Ministry and over 800 students holding scholarships graduated from different academic programmes this year,” said Al Nuaimi.

He said that Ministry of Education and Higher Education is annually offering about 1,000 scholarships to students for pursuing higher studies.

“There are many other institutions, which are offering scholarships to students like oil sector, universities and military,” said Al Nuaimi. He said that the scholarship programme helps greatly in providing required specialisations for the job market.
