Political unrest erupts in Peru after president is impeached, detained

(MENAFN) Pedro Castillo attempted to temporarily shut down the legislative part of the government and call for fresh elections, which led to his impeachment and removal from office by Peru's Congress.

Despite Castillo's order to suspend the body, lawmakers went ahead with their impeachment trial on Wednesday and unanimously decided to remove him (101-6). Castillo was then succeeded by Vice President Dina Boluarte, who became Peru's first female president after being sworn in by the Congress.

Castillo was seen on social media videos being held by police, unrestrained, in a police station in Lima, though it's unclear if he's being detained or not. In a joint statement earlier on Wednesday, Peru's military forces and national police rejected his effort to install a "exceptional emergency government" in lieu of the opposition-controlled Congress. Since he took office in July last year, lawmakers have attempted to impeach him twice.

Boluarte, a 60-year-old lawyer who was inaugurated as president for the period of 2026, claimed. She requested a political standstill while she forms a new cabinet with members from various parties, “there has been an attempted coup that has not found an echo in the institutions, nor in the street.” Adding that “what I ask for is a space, a time to rescue the country.”
