Rwanda accuses world for not standing with Congo in its crisis

(MENAFN) Rwanda’s foreign minister has blamed the world of exacerbating the crisis the Democratic Republic of Congo’s east, when Washington pressed Kigali to stop its alleged support for insurgents in the restive area.

In a call to Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Sunday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated external support for troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has to stop, “including Rwanda’s assistance to M23.”

Rwanda has refused repeated US-backed accounts of support for the M23 rebel group, a claim also made by independent specialists for the UN who found that Kigali was helping and abetting the group.

The mostly Congolese Tutsi group continued fighting last year following lying dormant for years, setting off a disaster in eastern DRC.

Rwanda’s foreign minister, Vincent Biruta, made a declaration that Kagame and Blinken “had good discussions... but differences in understanding of the issue remain.”

“The wrong and misguided approach of the international community continues to exacerbate the problem,” Biruta further stated late Monday.

“External interference and dictates” were undermining regional diplomatic efforts to solve the problem, he continued.
