Germany fires football federation sporting director after early World Cup elimination


(MENAFN) The German Football Association (DFB) has fired sporting head Oliver Bierhoff following the team's early departure from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

"Oliver Bierhoff and the DFB have today agreed to terminate his contract, which was originally due to run until 2024," the German football leading body stated in an announcement Monday.

"Oliver Bierhoff has been of incredible service to the DFB. Even though we have fallen short of expectations on the pitch in recent tournaments, he has been behind big moments," as stated by DFB leader Bernd Neuendorf.

"His work will forever be intertwined with our World Cup triumph in Brazil. Even in turbulent times, he always followed his goals and visions and has helped shape the DFB in a sustainable manner," he also noted.

The who is 54 years old become part the DFB in 2004 after an extraordinary playing career, with Germany achieving the World Cup in 2014, collecting their fourth title making them the team with second most titles with Italy.
