This winter, France may witness darkness

(MENAFN) According to Xavier Piechaczyk, the president of energy regulator RTE, France may experience rolling blackouts this winter if its electrical infrastructure is stressed owing to cold weather and excessive demand.

In an interview with France Info radio, he warned of the dangers of power outages in January as the country works to restart its nuclear reactors, which had been shut down for maintenance.

France generates nearly 70% of its electricity from a nuclear fleet of 56 reactors, 22 of which are now shut down, resulting in a significant decrease in power output.

The disruptions have exacerbated the EU's energy challenges, which have been exacerbated by a dramatic decline in natural gas exports from Russia. While France is less reliant on Russian energy than other EU nations, a shortage of local power generation provided by the nuclear sector is pushing the country to purchase electricity from its neighbors.

The French government has established a contingency plan and given local authorities instructions on how to handle any power outages and prioritize electricity allocation.
